We are thrilled to announce that Team Fire Foresight has been selected as one of 29 global finalists to progress to the next round of the XPRIZE Wildfire competition This recognition underscores our commitment to developing innovative technologies that transform wildfire detection and management.
The XPRIZE Wildfire competition
XPRIZE Wildfire is a four-year, $11 million competition designed to drive innovation in firefighting technologies. Its goal is to revolutionise current wildfire management by developing new technologies that can rapidly and accurately detect, characterise, and respond to wildfires before they become destructive.
In recent years, the frequency and intensity of bushfires have escalated, posing significant threats to communities worldwide. The World Economic Forum has estimated that the average annual global cost of wildfires is around USD 50 billion, with global wildfires in 2021 releasing an estimated 6,450 megatonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
In light of these alarming figures, effective bushfire detection and monitoring systems are more critical than ever. However, detecting bushfires within urban and rural areas is challenging due to variations in terrain, vegetation density, and human activity. Conventional methods, such as watch towers and patrols, often fail to cover large, remote areas effectively, with infrastructure limitations complicating communication and data transmission.
In response to this growing threat, the XPRIZE Foundation, a non-profit organisation that brings together investment and business communities to tackle humanity's most pressing challenges, launched the XPRIZE Wildfire competition in 2023. This competition aims to foster innovation in firefighting technologies, enabling humanity to coexist safely with beneficial bushfires.
The Fire Foresight Solution – A Cutting-Edge Approach
Our team, Fire Foresight, brings together four innovative companies from across three
continents, each contributing unique expertise and technology to create a holistic autonomous solution for detecting, monitoring, and suppressing bushfires.
As part of the Autonomous Wildfire Response track, Team Fire Foresight will have 10 minutes to autonomously detect and suppress a high-risk fire within a 1,000 km² environmentally challenging area, while avoiding decoy fires.
Our integrated detection system leverages LEO satellites for broad surveillance, AI-powered terrestrial cameras, and an extensive ground-based sensor network for detailed monitoring. This multi-layered approach detects thermal anomalies indicative of wildfires at their earliest stages. Advanced AI algorithms then analyse the data to confirm the fire's presence, significantly reducing false positives. This comprehensive system allows for rapid and precise identification of potential wildfires.
"Clearing the first round of the XPRIZE Autonomous Wildfire Response Challenge is a significant milestone for us. Our team’s innovative technologies and collaborative efforts have demonstrated immense potential in revolutionising wildfire management. Solving the bushfire problem requires a joint effort, and our team is uniquely positioned with people on the ground in every corner of the world. By leveraging our diverse backgrounds, expertise, and global presence, we can effectively tackle the challenges posed by bushfires and work towards a safer future for all."
